Police released the name Thursday of a suspect who was struck and killed by a police car during a foot chase Wednesday night.
The man was identified as Mark E. Taylor, 32, of the 300 block of West 32nd St. Taylor died in a hospital after the chase in the 7100 block of Sewells Point Road.
The accident occurred about 6:40 p.m. when Taylor tried to run across the road and was hit by the oncoming car.
The chase began near a convenience store after an officer spotted a car that had been reported stolen early Wednesday. The driver of the car, identified as Taylor, pulled into the store parking lot, near the intersection of Johnstons and Sewells Point roads. Taylor went into the store, then came back out and ran, police said.
As the officer chased Taylor on foot, dispatchers called more officers to the scene. As the chase continued, Taylor ran between two apartment buildings, then tried to cross the road, said Larry Hill, police spokesman. Hill said the officer in the car was using his lights and siren and tried to stop, but was unable to.
Taylor's body was taken to the state medical examiner's office. Hill said that Taylor was also wanted on three warrants of failure to appear in court.
The officer who was driving the car that hit Taylor was placed on administrative duty. His name was not released because an investigation is continuing. The case will be turned over to the commonwealth attorney's office for review. ILLUSTRATION: JOHN C. BELL
