ROBERT G. WILLIAMS

Cmdr. Robert Gray Williams Sr., U.S. Coast Guard retired, 61, died Thursday Aug. 15, 1996, in an area hospital.

Cmdr. Williams was born in Sullivan's Island, S.C., and was a retired commander in the U.S. Coast Guard, a graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the University of Michigan, where he received his master's degree in marine architecture/engineering. Cmdr. Williams was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, Manteo Masonic Lodge (NU)521 AF&AM and the Manteo Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. Mr. Williams was owner and operator of Manteo Marine Inc. and Dare Haven Motel. He was a former Dare County commissioner and past president of the Manteo Rotary Club. He was chairman of the Oregon Inlet Waterways committee, College of the Albemarle board of directors and the board of directors for the Albemarle Mental Health.

He was the son of the late James Manning and Nellie O'Neal Williams Sr. and the husband of Joanne Edwards Williams.

Besides his wife, surviving are a daughter, Jennifer S. Williams of Manteo; two sons, Robert G. ``Rob'' Williams Jr. of Manteo, Jacob D. Williams of Portsmouth; a sister, Thelma W. Wilkie of Raleigh; a brother, James M. ``Jimmie'' Williams Jr. of Wanchese; and a step-grandchild, Christopher Cahoon of Manteo.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday in Mount Olivet United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dennis Goodwin. Burial with military honors will be held in the Manteo Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Pipe Organ Fund, c/o Mount Olivet United Methodist Church or the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Ct. 06320. The family will receive friends at their residence, 111 Rial Drive Manteo. Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo, is handling arrangements.
