AFL-CIO President John Sweeney, right, visited Newport News

Shipbuilding on Friday. Sweeney lunched with shipyard executives and

labor leaders, shook hands with rank-and-file Steelworkers and

toured the first commercial oil tanker the yard has built since

1979. The big Peninsula shipyard recently completed the hull of the

Despotico, above behind a brass propeller, one of four tankers being

built for a Greek ship owner. The shipyard also will build five

similar double-hulled tankers, which are being paid for in part by

a pension fund run by Union Labor Life Insurance Co. Inc. The

tankers are to be built and crewed by union labor.
