CATHERINE C. BROTHERS

Catherine Crowder Brothers, 90, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 1996 in Obici Hospital.

A native of Dinwiddie County, she was the widow of Henry Brothers and the daughter of the late Rosa Ellen Mayes and Amos Henry Crowder.

Mrs. Brothers graduated in 1926 from the State Teachers College in Farmville. She taught for three years in Dinwiddie County and then in Nansemond County for 17 years at Kings Fork and Cypress elementary schools. She was a member of the National Educational Association, Virginia Educational Association, Nansemond County Educational Association and was past president of the Nansemond County Educational Assocation.

Mrs. Brothers was a member of Cypress Chapel Christian Church where she taught the Ladies Bible Class and organized and taught the Ellis Clark Sunday School Class. She was a former secretary of the Sunday School and the church. Mrs. Brothers directed and sang in the church choir for a number of years.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty B. Painter of Dunedin, Fla.; five sons, Henry C. Brothers of Prattville, Ala., Charles H. Brothers, Ben L. Brothers, N.B. Brothers II and Thomas E. Brothers, all of Suffolk; two sisters, Yates C. Dean of Radford and Rose Ellen Powers of New Boston, Texas; one brother, Maclin T. Crowder of Jacksonville, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. John R. Kimball in Cypress Chapel Congregational Christian Church with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. and other times at 104 Lakeview Court. Memorial donations may be made to the Cypress Chapel Christian Church Memorial Fund, 1891 Cypress Chapel Road, Suffolk, Va. 23438, or a charity of choice.
