One man died and two others were hurt when the vehicle they were in overturned in a popular four-wheeling area on the city line with Portsmouth.
Police said the 1978 AMC Jeep hit an embankment and overturned about 2:30 p.m. along in an area of mud flats inaccessible to most vehicles. The area, well-known to four-wheeling enthusiasts, is about two miles from Victory Boulevard near the Alcoa Plant on the north bank of the Elizabeth River.
Scott Thomas Caron, 25, of the 9600 block of Chesapeake Blvd. in Norfolk, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Terry Dehollander, 28, who was a passenger in the rear seat, was flown to the Trauma Center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital by the Nightingale helicopter ambulance. He was listed in stable condition late Sunday. His address was not immediately known.
Charles Richard Langley, 29, of the 2200 block of East Ocean View Ave. in Norfolk, had minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.
The cause of the accident is under investigation. Police said it was unclear who was driving at the time of the accident, but no charges had been filed as of Sunday night.
All three men were wearing seat belts, police said.
