For the past nine years, I have been working with poor and homeless people; for six years, I worked full-time at a shelter/soup kitchen in Washington, D.C. During these years, I have seen many drug addicts denied treatment and elderly people denied medication.
In the meantime, according to a front-page article in your paper (``EVMS woos best, brightest,'' Aug. 6), the multibillion-dollar vivisection industry finds ``millions of dollars'' to fund geriatric research on fruit flies, rats and monkeys. This is an outrage!
People who experiment on animals are denying the reality of the animals' pain, frustration and fear. Their time (and our money) would be better spent educating people as to ways to prevent diseases and live healthier lives and providing health care to the millions of Americans who cannot afford it.
