An 18-year-old Norfolk man, wanted on 16 criminal charges in four separate robberies, was arrested Sunday night, police said Monday. A 14-year-old male also was charged in one of the crimes.
All of the robberies occurred on East Little Creek Road, and in two cases women were robbed in their cars at gunpoint.
The man, Charles L. Smith, did not resist when robbery squad investigators arrested him near the intersection of East Little Creek and Chesapeake Boulevard while he was walking home from getting something to drink. Smith, of the 1100 block of Jernigan Ave., was taken into custody at 8:10 p.m., police spokesman Larry Hill said.
Investigators D.M. Peterson, L.E. Hockman and J.T. Dunn used interviews, a police sketch and several leads to find the suspect, Hill said.
``The case was solved through good old-fashioned police work,'' he said.
Smith is accused of abducting and assaulting a 30-year-old Norfolk woman at a fast-food drive-in window about 12:30 a.m. last Tuesday. While the woman waited for her order at the Wendy's restaurant in the 1300 block of E. Little Creek, Smith allegedly entered her car through the passenger-side door and forced her at gunpoint to drive to a location near North Military Highway and Hilton Street. There, police said, the man assaulted her.
Smith was charged in that crime with rape, robbery, abduction, sodomy, malicious wounding and five firearms violations.
The second crime he was charged with occurred Sunday at Almost-A-Banc in the 1300 block of E. Little Creek. In that case, he is accused of forcing a 23-year-old woman to drive to the 1200 block of Hilton Street. He was charged with robbery, abduction and two counts of using a firearm.
Smith also was charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit robbery at the Bojangles restaurant in the 1500 block of E. Little Creek. Those robberies happened July 31 and Aug. 13. Smith worked at the restaurant at the time, Hill said.
