TWO YOUTHS ROBBED AT GUNPOINT IN ELIZABETH CITY AFTER CURFEW

For two 15-year-old boys, it didn't pay to break Elizabeth City's midnight curfew. They were robbed at gunpoint about 1:30 a.m. in the Hughes Boulevard Laundromat parking lot.

Police said Monday that two suspects pulled into the lot, pointed a gun at the boys and took $24 and two beepers from them.

Police are seeking Darren D. Williams, 24, and Eureka Y. Johnson, 28, in connection with the robbery. Police said they believe Johnson and Williams are headed for Florida in a burgundy 1987 Chrysler LeBaron. The North Carolina license plate number is JTZ4972.

Williams is a black male, 5 feet 8 inches, weighing 160 pounds. Johnson is a black female, 5 feet 5 inches, weighing 180 pounds.

Police Det. Lt. Joe Tade said the suspects are on probation for purse snatching.

According to city ordinance, youths under 16 years old must be off the streets by 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and by midnight Friday and Saturday. Elizabeth City instituted the curfew in December 1993. Even after three years on the books, the flow of violations continues. In the last five days, police have arrested 10 teens, Tade said.

``Being as short-handed as we are, we are not able to enforce it as much as we would like to,'' Tade said. ``We get calls, calls, calls.''

Tade said there is a particular group of teens that have been breaking into cars.
