I'm convinced Marcel Desaulniers likes to play with food more than a 2-year-old and his soon to be published ``An Alphabet of Sweets'' (Rizzoli, $15.95) doesn't change my opinion.
Desaulniers, who is well-known as the executive chef/co-owner of the Trellis Restaurant and Cafe in Williamsburg, author of ``The Trellis Cookbook,'' ``Death by Chocolate,'' and ``The Burgermeisters,'' has taken a whimsical approach to this volume. He's teamed up with acclaimed Yorktown artist Nancy Thomas to produce the ABCs of desserts. From anglaise to zabaglione, each letter of the alphabet has it's own recipe and color print.
If you want to see something of a preview of ``An Alphabet of Sweets,'' check out the acknoledgements in Desaulniers' ``Desserts to Die For'' (Simon & Schuster, 1995).
Not only will there be a book full of mouth-watering desserts and lively art, The Nancy Thomas Gallery will sell a line of folk-art kitchen implements based on the book. Items include hand-carved wooden spoons with book characters on painted on the handles ($19); a wall box ($98) for holding letters, recipes, etc. and decorative plaques of the book's 27 illustrations ($27 to $220 depending on size).
``An Alphabet of Sweets'' and the folk-art items will be available in October. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo by Rizzoli
