PIER FISHING SLOW ALONG NORTHERN BEACHES

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was fairly slow at most locations Tuesday.

Some bluefish and Spanish mackerel were landed late Monday afternoon on Kitty Hawk Pier. A few pinfish and bar jacks were taken Tuesday.

Avalon Pier reported a 53-pound cobia decked Monday evening. Fishing was slow Tuesday, with only a few croaker landed.

Spot, sea mullet and small flounder were taken from Nags Head Pier sporadically. Quite a few cobia were seen, but none were hooked.

Jennette's Pier anglers caught a lot of small spot throughout the day. A few Spanish mackerel also were landed. A 40-pound king mackerel was caught by Pleasant Williams of Portsmouth early in the afternoon.

Some spot and croaker were taken on Outer Banks Pier early in the morning, and a few Spanish mackerel and pompano were landed later in the day.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier fishermen caught a few flounder and Spanish mackerel during the morning, and some spot in the afternoon.

Small bottom fish were landed from Avon Pier steadily throughout most of the day.

Fishing was slow on Frisco Pier, with only a few small bottom fish and Spanish mackerel taken.

Surf fishing was fairly good Tuesday along the northern beaches, with some small spot, croaker and sea mullet taken from deeper sloughs.

A few keeper flounder, small bluefish and croaker were landed around Oregon Inlet.

Plenty of spot and croaker were caught by surfcasters from Rodanthe to Buxton. Flounder fishing was good around Ramp 34.

Some nice Spanish mackerel were caught at Cape Point just before sunset Monday, and a few pompano were taken Tuesday.

Spanish mackerel were landed by surf fishermen who were good casters in the Hatteras Inlet area Monday afternoon. Fishing from Frisco to False Point was slow Tuesday.

In-shore trolling was fair around Oregon Inlet, with some Spanish mackerel and 5- to 10-pound king mackerel taken.

Headboats around the inlet caught a few small croaker and flounder.

Billfishing was good northeast of Oregon Inlet Tuesday, but not quite as hot as Monday, when more than 170 white marlin were released. Dolphin and tuna fishing were slow. The best billfish action was around the triple zeros.

Dolphin fishing improved off Hatteras, with some fair catches reported. Scattered wahoo and tuna also were taken. Billfishing was good, with some blue marlin, white marlin and sailfish released.

The water temperature was 78.5 degrees Tuesday at the Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 81 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
