Phillip Thomas Heffernan Jr., 74, passed away Wednesday Aug. 21, 1996, in Norfolk General Hospital.
Phillip was born in Saxtonville, Mass., in July 1922. As a captain in World War II, he fought as a Marine Corps Pilot flying SPD bombers in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross twice and the Bronze Star four times. His long career as a magazine publisher began in Chicago in 1950 with Gage Publishing Company and his career culminated in New York City as senior vice president of Ziff-Davis Publishing Company.
Mr. Heffernan was instrumental in the explosive growth of special interest publishing magazines in the 60's through the 80's. He retired to North Carolina in 1985. Upon relocation to Currituck County, he served as the chairman of the Currituck County Airport Authority and chairman of the Currituck ounty Economic Development Committee, and was instrumental in the early acquisition phase of Whalehead Club. Until his death, he served as the treasurer of the Rowells Point Community Association.
Mr. Heffernan is survived by his wife, Mildred, of the home; four children, Phillip Heffernan III, John Heffernan, both of Cold Springs, N.Y., Caroline Heffernan III of New York City, Lisa Heffernan-Orf of London, England; and by four grandchildren, Katharine, Edward and Benjamin Orf and Sarah Heffernan.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews by the Sea in Nags Head, N.C. on Sunday at 2 p.m. A gathering will be held after the service at the Heffernan residence at 45 Griggs Acres Drive, Point Harbor.
