GULF WAR CORRESPONDENT ARNETT TO SPEAK IN ODU LECTURE SERIES

CNN international correspondent Peter Arnett will open this year's President's Lecture Series at Old Dominion University, heading a lineup of speakers that also includes sex therapist ``Dr. Ruth'' Westheimer, civil rights leader Julian Bond, conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly and gymnast/actress Cathy Rigby.

Arnett, who has covered the world's war zones from Vietnam to Bosnia, was the only Western reporter based in Iraq for the duration of the Persian Gulf War. His reports from Baghdad angered some supporters of the U.S. war effort.

He will speak on ``The World as a Global Village'' Thursday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m. in the ODU Field House.

Here's the rest of the schedule:

Norman Myers, an environmental consultant, on ``Population, Environment and Development: The Great Challenges of Our Age,'' Oct. 17 in the Mills Godwin Jr. Building auditorium.

Westheimer, the pioneering psychosexual therapist and adviser, ``Sexually Speaking,'' Nov. 14. The location has not been announced.

Morris Dees, lawyer and co-founder of the anti-racist Southern Poverty Law Center, ``Teaching Tolerance,'' Jan. 23, Godwin auditorium.

Bond, the longtime civil rights activist and TV/radio commentator, ``A Collision Course in a Divided Society,'' Feb. 12, Godwin auditorium.

Schlafly, president of the anti-feminist Eagle Forum, ``The Feminists Just Don't Get It,'' March 20, Athletic Administration Building gymnasium.

Rigby, the Olympic medalist turned Tony Award-winning Broadway performer, ``Going for the Gold,'' April 10, Field House.

In addition, the President's Science Lecture Series will present C. Wylie Poag, an authority on coastal paleontology and sediments, discussing his theory of the formation of the Chesapeake Bay on Sept. 26 in the Godwin auditorium.

All the lectures are free and open to the public. ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
