DANVILLE OFFICIAL TO SPEAK TO SCHOOL EMPLOYEES: Danville Vice Mayor Ruby Archie will give a motivational speech 9:30 a.m. Monday at Willett Hall as part of the Portsmouth school district's back-to-school assembly for employees.

Archie, a community activist and retired educator, said she would try to inspire Portsmouth staffers by, among other things, sharing educational success stories from other areas.

The annual assembly is held to pump up staffers for the new school year and recognize schools and individual employees for their accomplishments the previous year.

Superintendent Richard D. Trumble, Mayor James W. Holley III and other local and state officials will participate in the event.

NORFOLK

ROAD TO BE CLOSED: Wilson Road between Indian River Road and Colon Avenue will be closed for a month, from Tuesday through Sept. 26, while workers replace utilities under the street.

The work is part of the Campostella Road widening project. Motorists are asked to use alternate routes.

CITY CLEANUP: Norfolk Sweeps Clean city program kicks off today for PACE First Red Sector residents.

To avoid citations next month, tenants should begin fixing problems such as high weeds and grass, peeling paint, torn screens, insect-breeding places, broken fences and sheds, and improperly stored vehicles.

Inspections will be from Sept. 9-20 by city planning and codes administration, health, police and the Division of Solid Waste. Officials will observe and issue citations for violations by standing at curbside on city right-of-way. They do not trespass or enter homes or buildings.

``Amnesty Week'' will be held Sept. 23-27 when residents can discard bulk items at the curbside for pickup on the day their trash is regularly collected. The First Red Sector area is at the southern end of Norfolk.

Sector neighborhoods include Brambleton, Berkley, Campostella, Campostella Heights, Chesterfield Heights, Crown Point, Easton, Lake Terrace, Maple Hall-Hollywood, Middletown-Roberts, Tidwater Young, Tidewater Drive Industrial, Ingleside, Poplar Halls, Janaf-Military Circle, Lake Taylor, River Oaks, Glenrock, Kempsville and River Forrest.
