WALTER A. LEYLAND

Walter Alfred Leyland died Aug. 24, 1996, in Sentara Hampton General Hospital after a short illness.

He was the son of Alfred and Eliza Ainslee Leyland. His father was a naval architect and a native of Birkenhead, England. Walter Alfred was born in Belfast, Ireland, and brought his family to this country on the maiden voyage of the R.M.S. Lusitania. He was a graduate of Newport News High School and the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School.

He was a past president of the Apprentice Alumni Association, and the Retired Mens Club, of which he was recently made song leader emeritus. He was a member of the Peninsula Ham Radio Operators Association, The Lions Club, and the local Musicians Union. He was a member of Bremond Lodge (NU)241 A.F. & A.M. and a member of the Peninsula Shrine Club. His religious affiliations were with Trinity United Methodist Church in Newport News. Through the years Walter led singing for Christian revivals in many churches on the Peninsula. He recently, at age 92, enjoyed singing at his granddaughter's wedding.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eunice; sons, Walter Jr. and Thomas Bassett; a grandson; three granddaughters; two great-grandsons; a sister, Winifred Leyland Chesnut of Norfolk and her son; as well as one niece and two nephews of Hadley, Mass.

A funeral service will be conducted in Lawrence B. Wood Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. Monday, burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Newport News. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 3 to 4:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed to Trinity United Methodist Church, Newport News.
