Nancy Carola Ross Cofer, 98, of the 1100 block of Bolling Ave., died Aug. 22, 1996, in a local hospital.
She is the widow of Vernon L. Cofer Sr. She was born in Accomac County, Va. and was the daughter of the late Lilly May Rew and Edward Thomas Ross. She attended school in Accomac Co. and later taught in Temperanceville. She came to Norfolk in 1917 to enter nurses' training at Sarah Leigh Hospital preparatory to going overseas. With the end of the war and graduation, she worked in the hospital and the Norfolk area as a registered nurse for several years.
Mrs. Cofer was a member of Freemason Street Baptist Church. She was very active in the Edgewater Home for Girls, the Edgewater Garden Club, the Women's Club of Norfolk, as well as many other civic and charitable organizations.
Survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth C. Faull of Williamsburg; a son, Dr. Vernon L. Cofer Jr. of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Douglas C. Faull of Fairfax, Nancy F. Miller of Kill Devil Hills, and James S. Cofer of Shakopee, Minn.; a cousin, Pauline Haley Parks of Parksley; and several great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Freemason Street Baptist Church by Dr. Donald J. Dunlap. The family will receive friends at 304 College Place following the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Freemason Street Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1739, Norfolk, Va. 23501 or to a favorite charity. Cox Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
