Carol W. Banks, 53, went home to be with her Lord on Aug. 25, 1996, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She is a cherished wife, mother, daughter, sister and grandma. The lives of many were touched by hers. She was a true witness to the power and perseverance that only Jesus can impart in a person's life. She will be remembered for her random acts of kindness and gracious manner.
Carol was a former resident of Aulander, N.C., and had been a peninsula resident for 10 years. She was a former student at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, where she was also employed as administrative assistant in the Sociology Department. Carol was also a former student at Barton College in Wilson, N.C., where she was employed as an administrative assistant to the dean of admissions. She retired from Christopher Newport University, Newport News, in 1994 where she had served as executive secretary to the dean. She was a member of the Peninsula Women's Network. She was also a member of North Riverside Baptist Church, Newport News, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Branches Sunday School Class.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry G. Banks; a daughter, Joye Beth Keith and her husband Brian of Raleigh, N.C.; her mother, Alice White of Aulander, N.C.; a sister, Mary Ann Britton of Ahoskie, N.C.; a stepson, Jeff Banks and his wife Andrea of Hampton; her paternal grandfather, Wingate White of Aulander; two grandchildren, Hayley Banks of Hampton and Seth Keith of Raleigh. She was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery Brian Joyner and her father, C.W. White Jr.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in North Riverside Baptist Church, Newport News, with Dr. John S. Carpenter Jr. and Dr. R. Furman Kenny officiating. A graveside service and burial will follow in Aulander Cemetery in Aulander, N.C., at 3:30 p.m. with Dr. Jesse Croom officiating. The family will receive friends after the burial at the home of Alice White and will also receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in W.J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, Newport News.
