Cleveland Craddock Kern, 82, died Aug. 24, 1996, at his home in Richmond.
Mr. Kern was born in Richmond, the son of the late Grover Cleveland and Grace Harold Craddock Kern. He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1931, and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Richmond, where he was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. He taught science and coached athletics at Chester High School and the McGuire School. Mr. Kern retired from the American Tobacco Company in 1974 after serving in a variety of executive positions in Richmond and Durham, including manager of Leaf Processing and Storage Operation in Durham.
Mr. Kern was an accomplished seaman and sailor. During World War II he taught celestial navigation to junior Naval officers and later captained a landing ship in the western Pacific. In retirement, Mr. Kern sailed the Chesapeake Bay extensively. His interest in architecture was manifested throughout his life as he designed and built many homes for his family and friends.
Mr. Kern is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Kathryn Hening; his daughter, Kathryn Drury, and her husband, William R. Drury, of Virginia Beach; his son, Cleveland C. ``Sonny'' Kern Jr., and his wife, Carol, of Block Island, R.I. and Wilton, Conn.; his daughter, Alice Willard, and her husband, Gordon C. Willard, of Farmington, Conn.; seven grandchildren, including Cleveland C. Kern III and his wife, Julie, of Charlotte, N.C., Kathryn H. Drury of Redmond, Wash., Michael R. Kern of Wilton, Conn., Jennifer N. Drury of Jackson, Wyo., Julie H. Kern of New York, N.Y., Amy K. Willard and Scott G. Willard both of Farmington. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Merideth H. and Andrew R. Kern of Charlotte.
A graveside service will be held in Forest Lawn Cemetery at 11 a.m. today. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Cleveland C. and Kathryn Kern Scholarship Fund at the University of Richmond (Office of Development, Maryland Hall, University of Richmond, Richmond, Va. 23173), or the Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad, 1101 Horsepen Road, Richmond, 23229.
