Purnell Maynard Garrenton, 85, of the 1600 block of Wapiti Ave., died Aug. 26, 1996.
Born in Lewiston, N.C., he was the widower of Merle Hall Garrenton and a member of London Bridge Baptist Church. Mr. Garrenton was a retired mechanic. He was a U.S. Naval veteran, participating in the invasion of Iwo Jima and the Pacific Theater.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean Buck of King of Prussia, Pa., Lynn Fountaine of Arapahoe, N.C.; a son, Louis Peters of San Jose, Calif.; a sister, Katie Huffman of Portsmouth; a brother, Myron Garrenton of Winter Haven, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, and a niece, Joan Clark of Norfolk.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Princess Anne Memorial Park by the Rev. Frances T. Moody. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is handling arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity.
