A West Virginia University basketball recruit from Churchland High School in Portsmouth was ordered Tuesday to serve five years probation for sexually abusing a female student in her dormitory room last winter.
Marvin Rodgers, who pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual assault, will be placed on a state registry of sexual offenders for 10 years, said Monongalia County Prosecutor Marcia Ashdown.
Rodgers' 12-month prison sentence was suspended under a plea agreement that met with the victim's approval, Ashdown said.
Rodgers, who has never been part of the basketball team, is appealing his expulsion from the university, and coach Gale Catlett said there will be no decision on his basketball status until the appeal is completed.
