PREVIEW: HIGH SCHOOL FORECASTS: SALEM

SALEM

COACH: Bill McTyre (5th year, 20-20)

STAFF MEMBERS: Roscoe Coles, Chris Karvala, Tim Eldredge, Mike DeWitt, Walter Druitt

WHERE THEY PLAY: Salem High (capacity 4,000), 1993 Sun Devil Drive off Lynnhaven Parkway in Virginia Beach

LAST YEAR'S RECORD: 6-4 overall, 6-3 in the district

RETURNING STARTERS: Matt Seaton, Sr., C/LB, 5-10, 180; John Backus, Jr., OG/LB, 6-0, 195; James Popp, Jr., OT/DT, 6-0, 240; Dennis Freeman, Jr., RB/DE, 6-1, 170; Reggie Murphy, RB/DB, 5-8, 155; Kevin Miller, Jr., PK, 6-0, 175; Doc Williams, Sr., QB/DB, 5-9, 180; Donald Eldridge, Sr., RB/LB, 5-10, 200; Trevelle Archie, Sr., OG/LB, 5-10, 185; Quel Smith, Jr., SE/DB, 5-8, 150; Thomas Grissom, Jr., OG/LB, 5-10, 190; Patrick Cason, Sr., TE/LB, 6-0, 210; John Carasella, Sr., RB/LB, 5-9, 190.

TOP NEWCOMERS: James Carter, Sr., RB/DB, 5-9, 165; Jason Harrison, Jr., QB, 6-1, 190; Roscoe Coles Jr., Jr., RB/DB, 5-11, 155; Chris Satterfield, Jr., RB/DE, 6-0, 175; Eric Wynn, So., SE/DB, 5-9, 150; Brandon Sullivan, So., OT/DT, 6-0, 260.

OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW: Placekicker Kevin Miller - the leading returning kicker in South Hampton Roads - can put the Sun Devils on the board from inside the 35 and he'll likely get plenty of closer chances, as Salem can smoke opposing defenses with its speed. James Carter hits the hole extremely fast according to McTyre, who adds that Chris Satterfield is pure lightning. And McTyre said you couldn't get a handle on Reggie Murphy, who averaged 10 yards a carry in limited duty, even if you had him in a closet.

DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW: The line might be suspect, but opposing running backs will likely get run down as the Sun Devils can also fly on defense. Salem lacks size and depth on both sides of the ball and what talent there is, is unproven. A pair of two-way tackles - 6-foot, 260-pound sophomore Brandon Sullivan and 6-0, 240-pound junior James Popp - are probably the best.

COACH'S QUOTE: ``We've got excellent speed at all the speed positions. If I only had 260-pound linemen . . . ''

IT'S A FACT: Miller is the top returning kick scorer in the area and is also one of the Eastern Region's top golfers.
