PREVIEW: HIGH SCHOOL FORECASTS: WILSON

WILSON

COACH: Jenson Baker (1st year but was 3-17 in earlier stint as head coach in 1993 and 1994)

STAFF MEMBERS: Charles Richardson, DeWayne Beale, Johnny Eley, Mike McClure, Ray Hicks, Vernon Gregory, Darrick Reaves, Steve Cassell.

WHERE THEY PLAY: Churchland Stadium (3,500 capacity) off Cedar Lane in Portsmouth.

LAST YEAR'S RECORD: 0-10 overall, 0-7 district

RETURNING STARTERS: Kavonzo Beamon, Jr., QB/DB, 5-10, 170; Terrance Winston, Jr., QB/DB, 5-10, 165; Paul Connolly, Jr. C/LB, 5-9, 168; Donte Barnes, Sr., OG/LB, 5-10, 210; Antoine Orton, Jr., FB/LB, 5-9, 180; Theodore Collins, Sr., OT/DT, 6-1, 239; Michael Hargraves, So., RB/DB, 5-9, 150; LaShawn Henderson, Sr., RB, 4-11, 130; Kevin Riddick, Sr., OT/DT, 5-11, 250.

TOP NEWCOMERS: Anthony Cameron, Jr., WR/DB, 5-10, 160; Zavier Downs, Jr., FB/LB, 5-9, 175; Anthony Holloway, Fr., QB/LB, 5-8, 180; Monte Green, Jr., WR/DB, 5-9, 160; Mohanda Whitfield, So., WR/DB, 6-1, 163; Leotis Watkins, So., G/DE, 5-9, 165.

OFFENSIVE OVERVIEW: After spending a year on Darnell Moore's staff at Norfolk State, Baker plans to stay with the same offense system put in by Joe Ladisic, a former Moore assistant at Wilson, for the Presidents last year. Wilson has a good 1-2 QB punch in Winston and Beamon and the starting tailback will be a mighty mite, the 4-11, 130-pound Henderson.

DEFENSIVE OVERVIEW: Hicks, a former Wilson star, is now the defensive coordinator with McClure working with defensive backs. The linebacking will be superb with Barnes, Orton and Connolly and the secondary appears very good. A key will be the development of newcomers up front.

COACH'S QUOTE: ``Our weight training program is behind about three months so we are getting off to a late start. As far as the season, we are just looking at each game as a chance to go 1-0.''

IT'S A FACT: Returning to the Eastern District after 30 years in the Southeastern, Wilson once helped draw 27,000 to Foreman Field in a game with Granby (1945).
