Robert A. Smith of Norfolk has been appointed as a board member for the Selective Service System. The board, currently in an inactive status, is responsible for deciding claims for certain classifications such as conscientious objection, hardship and religious ministry should a draft be reinstituted by Congress and the President.

Glen McClure, a Norfolk resident who is a commercial and advertising photographer, had a series of black and white photographs of Ireland included in the 1996 Photography Annual of Communication Arts, an international professional journal that covers graphic design, advertising, commercial photography and illustration. McClure's entry was selected as one of 179 winners out of 7,038 submissions.

MILITARY PEOPLE

Marine Lance Cpl. Dwayne Adams, son of Brenda K. Adams of Norfolk and a 1995 graduate of Lake Taylor High School, recently reported for duty with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station Tustin, Santa Ana, Calif.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Eric D. Sanders, whose wife, Sabrina, is the daughter of Melvin and Gladys Harris of Norfolk, recently participated in the decommissioning ceremony of the aircraft carrier America, which had its home port in Norfolk.

Sanders was one of the last sailors to serve aboard one of the nation's oldest aircraft carriers.

The decommissioning ceremony was held in Portsmouth.

CAMPUS NOTES

Two Norfolk residents have graduated from Radford University. Henry Thomas Goode II, son of Stacy J. Goode, earned a bachelor of science degree in physical science. Rachelle Karp, daughter of Anna Lisa Karp, earned a bachelor of science degree in education.

Katherine M. Loring began work in July as director of Virginia Wesleyan College's Adult Studies Program. The program offers classes in the evenings, early mornings and on weekends. MEMO: If you have news about a Norfolk resident, please send it to
