It was distressing to hear of the dilemma of Janice Jones (letter, Aug. 22) when she sought medical attention for her husband, who was overcome by heat recently.
It is certainly our goal at North Suffolk Family Medicine to make every effort to provide care as soon as possible in emergency situations.
When patients call our office and explain the emergency situation, we do everything possible to see the patient. Family practice physician offices have scheduled patients to be seen by appointment; urgent care centers take patients as they walk in. Although most family practice offices try to have some flexibility in scheduling, there are times when that is not possible.
It is sometimes difficult to balance the needs of the scheduled patient, who expects to be seen on time by his or her physician, with the needs of patients who have immediate needs. In the case of a true emergency, a local hospital emergency department is the best course for care.

Suffolk Caring for children behind special fair
On Saturday, Aug. 3, more than 600 Suffolk residents attended the first annual Suffolk C.A.R.E. Fair at Elephant's Fork Elementary School.
This ``one-stop shopping'' opportunity for health and human services brought numerous school and city departments and other agencies together in a spirit of interagency collaboration.
Supported by local businesses and wonderful volunteers, the Suffolk C.A.R.E. Fair provided materials, supplies and services such as physical examinations, dental screenings, immunizations, medical referrals, school, sports and child care registrations and more, at no charge to the children of our city.
On behalf of the sponsors - the Early Childhood Development Commission, Obici Hospital, the Suffolk Health Department, Suffolk Public Schools and the Suffolk Department of Social Services, I thank everyone involved for the interest they showed in Suffolk's most valuable resource, our children.
