Zella Koehl, 88, a resident of Norfolk, Va., for the past eight years, died Aug. 27, 1996, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Zella was born May 14, 1908, in Ottawa, Ohio, to William and Molly (Hornung) Roof. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Eugene Koehl of Norfolk; one son, Dr. George W. Koehl and his wife Patty of Norfolk; four grandchildren, Tim Koehl of New York City, Dr. Lisa Mooney (Dr. Eric) of North Grafton, Mass., Mrs. Andrea (Neil) McSweeney of Lynchburg, and Ted Koehl of Virginia Beach; three great-grandchildren, Katie, Ben and Will McSweeney of Lynchburg. Also a brother, Albert Roof and a sister, Mrs. Marian Davidson, both of Ottawa.
Zella was a retired school teacher. Her teaching career of 38 years started in a one-room schoolhouse teaching all eight grades, and concluded as the principal of Ottawa Elementary School. After retiring from teaching in 1970, Zella became very involved with the Ottawa Senior Citizen Center and served as their tour director for many years. In 1979, at the Ohio State Fair, she received the Outstanding Senior Citizen award for Putnam County.
In Norfolk, Zella was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Norfolk Senior Citizen Center.
Visitation will be held at Love Funeral Home, Ottawa, Ohio, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St.'s Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, P.O.
