Spanish mackerel were caught just about everywhere along the Dare Coast Wednesday.
A few Spanish mackerel and spot were taken sporadically throughout the day on Kitty Hawk Pier.
Avalon Pier reported Spanish mackerel landed early in the morning. Later, a 35-inch cobia was released and a few spot were taken. Afternoon fishing was slow.
A few Spanish mackerel, sea mullet and small flounder were landed from Nags Head Pier during the day.
Anglers on Jennette's Pier caught a few spot, a couple of keeper flounder and an 11-pound king mackerel.
A few Spanish mackerel and bluefish were landed on Outer Banks Pier during the morning. Lots of cobia were seen, but none were hooked. Afternoon action was nil.
South of Oregon Inlet, fishermen on Rodanthe Pier caught scattered Spanish mackerel and a few spot. A 35-pound king mackerel was decked by Clyde Coltrane of Williamston.
Spanish mackerel fishing was excellent on Avon Pier during the morning. After an early afternoon lull, action resumed and continued until dark. Most of the fish weighed between 1 and 1 1/2 pounds, and were taken on jiggers.
A 14-pound king mackerel, Spanish mackerel weighing as much as 5 pounds and some small bottom fish were taken during the morning on Frisco Pier. Afternoon fishing was slow.
Surf fishermen along the northern beaches caught fair numbers of Spanish mackerel, mullet and spot Wednesday.
Bottom fish, a few keeper flounder, tailor bluefish and Spanish mackerel were taken around Oregon Inlet.
Fishing was slow during the morning along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton, but some pompano and Spanish mackerel were taken in the afternoon.
Spanish mackerel were landed Tuesday evening at Cape Point. Pompano, spot and croaker were landed along the north beach Wednesday.
Action from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet was slow Wednesday.
Plenty of bluefish were landed late Tuesday in the Hatteras Inlet surf.
Inshore trolling was excellent around Oregon Inlet. Plenty of nice Spanish mackerel were taken, with the best action along the north side.
Headboats in the area caught fair numbers of mixed-sized croaker.
Blue water fishing was fairly slow except for well northeast of Oregon Inlet, where about 40 billfish were released. Plenty of billfish were seen in the area, but they were reluctant to take a bait. A few dolphin were taken in the area. Fishing was slow at the point.
Hatteras charters also reported slow fishing, with a few dolphin and wahoo taken. A blue marlin and a white marlin were released by the Connector.
The water temperature was 77 degrees Wednesday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 81 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
