Traffic-stopper Belva Weeks, with the help of retiring Police Chief

Ray Flowers, helps Manteo Elementary School students cross U.S.

Route 64-264 on Thursday, Dare County's first day back to class.

Schools re-opened their doors to 4,263 students, an increase of 188

pupils since June. Education officials expect that number could go

up even more next week after some families return from the long

Labor Day weekend holiday. Besides the students, 550 Dare County

school staffers returned this week - including 30 new teachers.

About 20 positions have been added to the county's education payroll

this year, School Board officials said. by CNB
