Old Dominion will begin the basketball season with less depth at guard than expected as junior college transfer Chris Haskin will not be eligible until at least the end of first semester.
Haskin has to pass an exit exam at Pensacola Junior College. He has passed the essay and English language skills sections, but has not met the required score on the mathematics and reading portions.
``It won't be a problem,'' said Haskin, who is down to his last of four allotted attempts on one section of the test. ``I think I'm going to get it done this time.''
If he passes, Haskin will enroll at Old Dominion for the second semester. He would become eligible Dec. 16, after the first semester is over. The Monarchs' schedule has not been released yet, but Haskin would miss at least six games and all of the preseason.
``That's going to put me behind, but there's not much I can do about it,'' said Haskin, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard who averaged 15.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and shot 37 percent from 3-point range last season.
ODU coaches could not be reached for comment Thursday. The loss of Haskin hurts at a position where ODU is already shy in depth. Another recruit, Michael Williams, failed to meet freshman eligibility requirements and has enrolled at Hargrave Military Academy.
ODU will open practice with just 11 scholarship players, including five guards. Returning starters Brion Dunlap and Mike Byers and reserve E.J. Sherod are the only guards with college experience. Redshirt freshman Brandon Jones, a swingman like Sherod, and true freshman Freddie Bryant round out the backcourt. by CNB
