PORTSMOUTH MAN ARRESTED

A man who was shot by a Virginia Beach police officer Aug. 12 was arrested in Portsmouth Wednesday night, police said.

Shawnta L. Ward was taken into custody in the Ida Barbour neighborhood after police learned that warrants were on file for him in Virginia Beach. Ward, who lives in Portsmouth, has been charged with burglary, grand larceny, grand larceny of an auto, carrying a concealed weapon and driving on a suspended license in Virginia Beach.

Ward was accused but never convicted of two murders and three shootings in Portsmouth last year.

He was in a stolen truck when a police officer stopped him in Virginia Beach Aug. 12. A citizen had identified Ward as one of the men leaving the scene of a burglary.

A police officer shot Ward at a car lot at Newtown and Baker roads. Ward was not armed at the time. Prosecutors cleared the officer of criminal wrongdoing last week, but the shooting is being investigated inside the police department.
