DOROTHY L. COLEY

Dorothy Reed Liles Coley was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was born July 11, 1919 in Norfolk to James Robert and Bessie Downing Liles. Dorothy graduated from Maury High School, Norfolk, in 1938. On March 31, 1941, she married U.S. Navy Lt. Charles Coston Coley. The ceremony was held in the small wooden chapel on the Naval Operating Base, Norfolk. Actively supporting her husband's career, she enthusiastically established homes in San Diego, Calif, Bremmerton, Wash., Ithaca, N.Y., Newport, R.I., Washington, D.C., and Norfolk. Often for long periods she remained at home with her daughter, Carolyn while her husband was away on active military duty in China, the Mediterranean and Korea. She effectively assumed full responsibility for her family and remained a solid support system for all.

In 1961, Dorothy returned with her husband, to his hometown of Oklahoma City. During the next 35 years she was an active member of Central Presbyterian Church. She was also president of the Little Sisters' Book Review Club, the first historian of Heritage Hills, president of the Pi Beta Phi Mothers' Club and worked with Mobile Meals. Most importantly, however, Dorothy was strongly dedicated to her family and friends. She was an honest, caring and beautiful woman with a lovely southern accent and gracious mannerisms. Dorothy hardly knew a stranger. She will always be missed.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Charles C. Coley; her daughter, Carolyn Coley Hubbard; three grandchildren, Cara, Katie and Andrew Hubbard. Dorothy was preceded in death by her two brothers, Robert Edmund and Roland Irvin Liles, and her sister, Katherine Liles Brickhouse. Mourning her loss are many nephews, nieces and cousins. Among them are Jack and Lanette Owens, Cathy Akins, Jack, Caroline, J. Coley and Cara Crain of Tulsa; Dr. Joe H. Coley, Larry and Sarah Blackledge, Todd and Sarah Brawley, Jeff and Carol Lee, Dan and Shirley Coley, Jack, Patricia and Katie Coley, Carol King, and Charles Coley all of Oklahoma City; Nan Coley of San Francisco; Elliott and Sue Coley of New Jersey; Steve Coley of Connecticut, Lewis and Jean Coley of Texas; Dollie and Bobby Liles, Ginevra Liles Conklin, Todd, Michael, and Lisa Conklin, and Dorthy Tisdale Orris, all of Norfolk.
