L. MICHAEL HARDT

Captain L. Michael Hardt, USN (Ret.), 53, died Aug. 30, 1996.

A native of Washington state, he graduated from St. Martin's in Olympia. He was commissioned an ensign in the United States Navy after graduating from Officer Candidate School. A distinguished career of 30 years was highlighted by three tours of duty in Vietnam, the commissioning and first commanding officer of Patrol Combatant Missile Hydrofoil Squadron TWO, commanding officer of the frigate USS Joseph Hewes (FF 1078), executive officer of the USS New Jersey (BB 62), and commander, Destroyer Squadron 26. For the last 10 years this brave man has fought his toughest battle. Fair winds and following seas.

Survivors include his wife, Dale W. Hardt; two sons; Michael Hardt Jr. and his wife, Pattyann, who reside in Oklahoma City, and Graham Hardt of Norfolk; two sisters, Patty Balestra and Marsha Payne, both of Washington state.

Full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 3 p.m. The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, a contribution be made to the American Cancer Society, 2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23518. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, is in charge of arrangements.
