W. EARL BYRUM

William Earl Byrum, 81, of the 2000 block of Wilroy Road, died Sept. 1, 1996 in Obici Hospital.

A native of Cypress Chapel, he was a son of the late George W. and Elsie Odella Baines Byrum. He was predeceased by his son, William Earl Byrum Jr., and a brother, Joseph Etheridge Byrum. Mr. Byrum was a retired salesman with Smithfield Packing Co., a World War II Navy veteran, a charter member of the Magnolia Ruritan Club with perfect attendance, and of Nansemond Masonic Lodge (NU)77. He was a member of Magnolia United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday School superintendent for 20 years and was a former chairman of the Administrative Board. He taught the Savage Bible Class, sang with the Prime Time Singers and was the oldest male member of the church.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Perry Byrum; a daughter, Earleen B. Sylvia of Suffolk; two brothers, George Woodrow Byrum and John Alden Byrum, both of Suffolk; a sister, Odelle Byrum Oliver of Suffolk; four grandchildren, William Clayton Byrum, George Randell Byrum of Franklin, Daniel Kirk Sylvia and James Benjamin Sylvia of Suffolk.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Magnolia United Methodist Church by the Rev. Clyde D. Nuckols Sr. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to Magnolia United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1764 Wilroy Road, Suffolk, Va. 23434. The family will be at the home of Earleen Sylvia, 2117 Wilroy Road. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
