Genevieve Holleman West, 99, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 1996 at her residence.
She was a native of Raleigh, the daughter of the late Genevieve Jordan and Edward Cantwell Holleman. She was the widow of the late Rupert Edgar West.
Mrs. West attended Meredith College, was a teacher at Moyock High School in the 1940s and '50s and later worked as secretary-receptionist for Dr. W.H. Romm in Moyock. She was a member of the Moyock Women's Club since 1924, serving as president from 1926-1929 and 1941-1945, president of District 16 of the N.C. Federation of Women's Clubs in 1934 and '35. In 1982 she was named an honorary life member of the N.C. Federation of Women's Clubs Inc. She actively worked toward having a local and county public library until it became a reality, serving as the first chairman of the Currituck County Library Board. She was a member of Moyock Baptist Church, where she taught Adult Bible Class and was a choir member, both for more than 50 years and was a member of the Women's Missionary Union.
Survivors include two daughters, Genevieve Adelia West and Josephine Maria West, both of Moyock.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in Moyock Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Vic Ramsey officiating. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Moyock Baptist Church Building Fund. The family will be at the residence. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, is in charge of arrangements.
