Boyd Oak Moody Sr., 80, of the 3500 block of Galberry Road, died on Friday, Aug. 30, 1996. He was a retired minister and Chesapeake public schools teacher.
Born in Charlotte County, Va. to the late Rev. Fountain and Mary Boyd Moody, Rev. Moody received his early education in Mecklenburg County, Va. at the Bluestone Presbyterian Mission School and Thyne Institute, Chase City, Va. He furthered his education at Virginia State University where he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in agricultural education. He was awarded the Doctor of Divinity degree from Virginia Seminary and College in Lynchburg.
At the age of nine, Rev. Moody accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior, and he was a devout Christian leader throughout his life. Called to the ministry and ordained in 1947, he pastored three Baptist churches in Fluvanna County, Va. In 1952, he came to Norfolk County to teach, and he accepted the pastorate of Union Bethel Baptist Church in Joliff. In July 1962, he assumed the pastorate of First Baptist Church of Logan Park, Norfolk, for 31 years until his retirement in 1993.
His professional career included teaching in Lunenburg County, Va. for one year; county agent of Buckingham County for eight years; Chesapeake teacher for more than 20 years. His religious, professional and community involvements were as follows: Tidewater Metro Baptist Ministers Conference, Portsmouth Ministers Forum, Hampton University Minister's Conference, Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention, Baptist State Convention, National Education Association, Virginia Education Association, Alumni Association of Virginia State University, NAACP, Chesapeake Men for Progress and the board of directors of the Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation.
He was married twice, first to the late Helen King Moody of Petersburg, and later to Julia Pitt Moody of Churchland.
His survivors include his wife, Julia Pitt Moody; two sons, Boyd O. Moody Jr. and Eric O. Moody of Chesapeake; two daughters, Joan Moody Joseph of Chesapeake and Karen Moody Hoskins of Randallstown, Md.; two sons-in-law, Irivng Joseph of Chesapeake and Richard Hoskins of Randallstown; two daughters-in-law, Adrean Moody and Sherrie Moody of Chesapeake; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Dwight E. Moody of Philadelphia and Ferman B. Moody of Harrisburg, Pa.; three sisters, Marie Moody Kirby of Philadelphia, Florence Moody Vaden of Red Oak, Va., Mary Moody Stokes of Farmville, Va.; and a host of many other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday in First Baptist Church Logan Park, Norfolk, by the Rev. Kevin L. Clay and eulogy by the Rev. Thomas M. Venable. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth. A wake service will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church. The body will be placed in church at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
