NORFOLK MAN DIES AFTER CAR IS STRUCK BROADSIDE BY PICKUP

A 61-year-old man died late Saturday after a traffic accident in which his car was struck broadside.

James Epps of the 900 block of Avenue J was driving west on Kimball Terrace about 10:30 p.m., police said, when the Pontiac Firebird he was driving was struck broadside by a pickup.

The pickup, driven by Ralph E. Parent, 50, of Suffolk, was heading north on Campostella Road, said Larry Hill, a police spokesman.

Rescue workers had to cut open the mangled car to reach Epps. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he died just after 11 p.m.

Parent also was taken to Norfolk General with multiple injuries. He was listed in stable condition on Sunday.

Charges are pending, Hill said. Neither driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, he said.
