HAMPTON'S QB SPARKS WIN OVER CLARK ATLANTA

Quarterback Matt Williams scored two touchdowns despite a lackluster day passing as Hampton University defeated Clark Atlanta 13-6 Sunday in the Atlanta Labor Day Football Classic.

Williams ran over from the 2-yard line with just under four minutes to play in the first quarter, and Hampton took a 7-0 lead.

Williams, who completed 9 of 19 for 88 yards with one interception, rounded out the scoring with a 19-yard run at 10:47 of the third quarter.

QB CHOICE: Virginia coach George Welsh answered the most pressing question in preseason camp Sunday by naming senior Tim Sherman as the Cavaliers' starting quarterback.

The Cavaliers open the season at home on Saturday against Central Michigan.

Sherman and sophomore Aaron Brooks had been locked in a battle for the quarterback job since spring practice.

Welsh said the competition between the two remains close and that both quarterbacks would play Saturday.

NEW POLLS: Even in victory, Kansas lost ground in The Associated Press' Top 25 college football poll Sunday, with the Jayhawks dropping out of the ratings after beating Ball State.

Kansas fell from No. 25 to make room for North Carolina, which beat Clemson 45-0 Saturday. The Tar Heels are ranked 24th. Virginia Tech is 15th and Virginia 23rd.

The top eight teams remain unchanged, led by No. 1 Nebraska and No. 2 Tennessee. Florida State (No. 3), Florida (No. 4) and Colorado (No. 5) round out the top five.

The USA Today/CNN poll features the same teams in its top five. The only change in the top ten has Penn State climbing to 6th from 8th. Virginia Tech and Virginia each move up one place to 14th and 20th, while North Carolina moves into 22nd.

In Saturday's late Top 25 games:

At Austin, Texas, James Brown threw for two TDs to lead No. 8 Texas over Missouri 40-10. Texas' Ricky Williams ran for 112 yards and two scores on 14 carries.

Quarterback Steve Sakisian completed 16 of 23 passes for 259 yards and four touchdowns as No. 16 BYU routed Arkansas State 58-9. by CNB
