I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the pictures in The Virginian-Pilot on Aug. 29. In less than an hour on Wednesday, Aug. 28, about 20,000 people in Bunol, Spain, turned 132 TONS of tomatoes into slop at the annual Tomato Festival. I couldn't help but feel sad because so many people in this world are starving.
Bullfights were rejected as cruel in 1932 in Bunol and the Tomato Festival replaced them. When Bunol went from a cruel festival to a waste festival, they certainly didn't advance much in 64 years. They could spend their time and money far more constructively.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if Bunol could change its annual Tomato Fighting Festival into an annual Tomato Feeding Festival? In the meantime, I vote for this fiasco to win a Worldwide Shame Award.
