John ``E'' Fletcher, 90, formerly of the 600 block of Garren Ave., died Sept. 2, 1996 in a local hospital.
Born in Monroe, La., he later moved to the Tidewater area. Mr. Fletcher was a member of the South Norfolk Lodge (NU)339 AF & AM, the Norfolk Scottish Rite Bodies as a 32nd degree, the Khedive Shrine Temple, a life member and only surviving founder of the Tidewater Coin Club and a member of the American Numismatic Association. He was a U.S. Navy chief petty officer retired, member of the Navy Fleet Reserve Association, retired civil service from the Naval Air Station and retired from the City of Norfolk as a security guard at the MacArthur Memorial. Also he was a member and deacon of the Spurgeon Memorial Baptist Church.
Mr. Fletcher was preceded in death by his parents, John Edward and France Ellis Fletcher. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Bowen Fletcher; two sons, John ``E'' Fletcher Jr. and Richard Ellis, both of Virginia Beach; a sister, Bernice Thompson of Monroe; two grandsons, Eric A. and Steven A. Fletcher, both of Virginia Beach; two granddaughters, Andrea L. Fletcher of Virginia Beach and Catherine Rash of Roanoke, Va.
Friends are invited to attend a graveside service that will be held at 3 p.m. today in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. The service will be officiated by Dr. Paul Lawson. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The American Cancer Society, 2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, Va. Altmeyer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
