SAILORS SERVE AS TV STARS: About 455 sailors and Marines stationed onboard the San Diego-based carrier Constellation volunteered to appear as extras in the filming of ABC's ``Home Improvement'' TV show recently at North Island Naval Air Station, San Diego. The season opener segment airs Sept. 17.

LEISURE TRAVEL OFFICES OPEN: CI Travel has opened eight new offices at area Navy installations, designed to provide leisure travel services for military personnel, their dependents and military retirees. The new travel offices are located at four naval installations in Norfolk, two in Portsmouth and two in Virginia Beach.

IMPACT OF DOWNSIZING: ``The Impact of Military Downsizing on Hampton Roads'' is the topic of a noon luncheon and presentation Sept. 19 at the Breezy Point Officer's Club, Norfolk Naval Base. John Simon, senior civilian at the naval base, and Steven Gibson, base business manager, will be the guest speakers. There is a charge for the luncheon. For reservations, call 426-5754.

INTERNATIONAL DAY CEREMONY: An International Day to honor foreign liaison officers assigned to Headquarters Army Training and Doctrine Command at Fort Monroe, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the post's Continental Park. The ceremony is open to the public. For more information, call 727-3506.

21-GUN NATIONAL SALUTE: Two Ukrainian warships, the Hetman Sagadachny and Konstantin Olshanskiy, are part of a 21-gun national salute with Fort Monroe starting at 8:20 a.m. Sept. 11, while passing the post en route to Norfolk Naval Base. It is customary for foreign ships of war, upon entering a harbor or passing near another country's fortification, to exchange gun salutes with designated stations. The event is open to the public.

COOPERATIVE OSPREY '96: The dock landing ship Pensacola served as the platform for Exercise Cooperative Osprey '96 held Aug. 16-26 at Camp Lejeune, N.C. The largest Partnership for Peace exercise so far in the United States involved more than 1,000 troops from 16 partnership nations and three NATO countries.

COMINGS AND GOINGS

DEPARTING:

More than 18 years of devoted service comes to an end at 10 a.m. Friday when the nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser Mississippi deactivates at Pier 11, Norfolk Naval Station. Guest speaker will be Vice Adm. Peter M. Heckman Jr., the ship's first commanding officer. Following the ceremony, the ship will be towed to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Effective Sept. 1, the Aegis cruiser Yorktown, the Atlantic Fleet's ``Smart Ship,'' changed its homeport from Norfolk to Pascagoula, Miss. The change is part of the Oct. 1995 Atlantic Fleet reorganization of surface forces. Yorktown is commanded by Cmdr. Richard Rushton, and it has a crew of 33 officers and 333 enlisted personnel.

A pioneer in submarine maintenance, the submarine tender L.Y. Spear will be decommissioned at 10 a.m. Friday at the South Wall, near the submarine piers at the Norfolk Naval Base. The tender was commissioned in 1970. The Spear was one of the first ships in the Navy to have female sailors assigned onboard.

CHANGE OF COMMAND

Capt. John ``Rock'' Stevens relieves Capt. Daniel Pendarvis III as commanding officer, Fitting Out and Supply Support Assistance Center. Stevens comes to the center from duty as the deputy commander for ships and submarines, Naval Inventory Control Point, Mechanicsburg, Penn. Pendarvis reports to Navy Exchange Command in Virginia Beach.

Capt. Thomas McAtee relieves Capt. Douglas Bellows as commanding officer of the Norfolk Naval Air Reserve at an 11 a.m. ceremony Saturday in hangar LP-33. by CNB
