A 19-year-old Navy man who had pulled off Interstate 664 to change a flat tire was killed Tuesday morning when he was hit by a street sweeper, state police said.
Benjamin M. Keene, who was stationed aboard the carrier Eisenhower, had just finished tightening lug nuts on a spare tire when he was hit by the sweeper, police said. Witnesses told police that the force of the impact threw Keene several feet.
The accident occurred at 5:39 a.m. on the northbound side of the road, near College Drive. Police said the driver of the sweeper, David McAfee of Norfolk, had fallen asleep at the wheel. McAfee, 43, was charged with reckless driving.
