Larry T. McCoy Jr., 57, of the 3300 block of Kensington St., died Sept. 3, 1996, in Virginia Beach.
Mr. McCoy was a native of Cove City, N.C. He attended Cove City Elementary School. He graduated from Dover High School in 1957 and went on to graduate from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, School of Pharmacy in 1963. He also attended the Medical College of Virginia and the Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a member of the Kings Grant Community League and the Boy Scout's Troop 419 assistant scoutmaster.
Larry was a pharmacist very devoted to his profession and his patients. He was a member of the American Pharmacists Association, the Virginia Pharmacists Association, and the North Carolina Pharmaceutical Association for 33 years. He served in numerous offices and as a board member of the Virginia Pharmacists Association for eight years in addition to many hours spent serving on committees. He served as treasurer of the Tidewater Pharmacists Association for 15 years. Through his years of experience he worked to strengthen his profession, sharing his broad knowledge of the organizations with others and serving as an ever-present support and mentor for his peers. He trained pharmacists and pharmacy students through the MCV School of Pharmacy student clerkship program. The inspiration for Larry's hard work was his commitment to his patients. During his 18 years at Farmco Drug Center at Lynnhaven, Virginia Beach, he touched the lives of thousands, and is remembered by patients as a friend and advisor. For his efforts he was awarded the Virginia Pharmacists Service Award in 1992 by his peers in the Virginia Pharmacists Association.
Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Lila McCoy; a daughter, Sonya McCoy of Virginia Beach; three sons, Larry T. McCoy III, Harry W. McCoy, Daryl E. McCoy, all of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Phyllis McCoy Heath of Kinston, N.C., Sue McCoy Williams of Washington, N.C.; two brothers, Kenneth Byron McCoy of Houston, Texas, Michael Miles McCoy of Cove City, N.C.; two grandchildren, Ryann Douglas Guinn and Daryl McCoy Jr., both of Virginia Beach.
Larry will be sorely missed for his excellence and commitment to his patients' care and the support he gave his colleagues.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 1996, at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel, by the Rev. Ronald Harrison. Burial will be at Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 until 8 p.m. H.D.
