IN THE WAKE OF A WAVE

When I read Jack Dorsey's article ``The Wave'' (Aug. 24, MetroNews) I was reminded of the time that I was diving and spearfishing at the second island of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel at slack high tide.

One moment I was spearfishing in 15 feet of water, I felt a slight surge, and the next moment I was on the surface in the trough of what looked to be a 10-foot wave. In another moment I was literally bodysurfing (in full scuba gear) over the rocks of the island onto the bay side of the bridge-tunnel.

The USS America was steaming through the channel between the first two islands. That was on July 21, 1988. That wake made a big impression on both my diving buddy and me.

On the lighter side, perhaps the East Coast Surfing Championships ought to be moved to Ocean View. The warships could provide larger and more dependable waves for the contest. Or maybe those ships could cruise the coast off Virginia Beach during the ECSC, assuring good surf for the competition.
