I agree with Christopher Reeve (Aug. 31, Focus, ``More medical research for a stronger U.S.''), our nation cannot tolerate discrimination of any kind. That includes discrimination against animals trapped in the medical research laboratories he's trying to raise money for.
Currently there is spinal cord research being conducted that involves snapping the spines of living, feeling animals. These animals are not only broken in two, they are forced to endure surgery after painful surgery until they are deemed no longer useful and thrown away.
It's nice that Mr. Reeve could get his message out; our society permits him to do that, but there are millions of others who haven't got that right. In laboratories they are lingering unseen right now. Nobody heeds their cries, and nobody cares when they die.
