PIER FISHING IS A WINNER ALONG NORTHERN BEACHES

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was good Friday.

Although fishing was slow during the morning, Kitty Hawk Pier reported spot landed in the afternoon. Spot also were caught by anglers on Avalon Pier off and on all day.

Fishermen on Nags Head Pier landed spot and croaker during the afternoon. Some nice spot, one-to 1 1/2-pound croaker, a few gray trout and black drum were taken throughout the day on Jennette's Pier.

Spot, croaker and one nice speckeled trout were landed from Outer Banks Pier during the morning. A few striped bass were released. A few half-pound spot and medium-sized croaker were decked in the afternoon.

On Hatteras Island, Avon Pier reported a few spot taken out of unusually clear, warm water in the afternoon. No other pier reports were available.

Surf fishing continued to be slow at most locations. Boat fishing was nil because of rough seas resulting from gusty winds after the passage of Hurricane Fran.

Action on all fronts should improve Saturday.

The water temperature was 78.5 degrees Friday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 83 degrees at Avon Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
