FRAN WAS NO MATCH FOR OVER 100 COMPETITORS: OUTER BANKS TRIATHLON

John Lomogda and Leslie Willis, both of Virginia Beach, set the pace Saturday for more than 100 participants in the 12th annual Outer Banks Triathlon.

Lomogda, 27, won the men's division with a time of one hour 12 minutes and 26 seconds. Willis, 32, led the women swimmers-bikers-runners with a clocking of 1:15:38.

The race is the major fund-raiser for the Dare County Voluntary Action Center. Many of the registered competitors did not participate because of the effects of Hurricane Fran, which skipped the Outer Banks but did heavy damage west and south of here.

The competitors were hammered with in-your-face waves in the opening leg, a swim of 0.6 miles, and by gusty winds in the 15-mile bicycle battle. They finished with a run of 5 kilometers.

Second overall in the men's division was Dawson Cherry, 32, of Chapel Hill, in 1:14:07. Third went to John Dill of Norfolk in 1:14:27.

Ann Marie Welch, 26, of Nags Head, was second overall in the women's competition in 1:22:16. Third went to Nancy Lewis, 37, of Norfolk, in 1:24:46.

The 12th annual triathlon drew more than 100 athletes to the Outer

Banks, although many registered participants were kept away by the

effects of Hurricane Fran on neighboring areas. The first leg of

the race started at the Dare County Ole Swimming Hole, right, and

competitors fought in-your-face waves for 0.6 miles. Next came the

hammering winds on the William Ulmstead Bridge over Croatan Sound,

above, part of a 15-mile bicycle battle. The race finished with a

15-kilometer run. The yearly triathlon is the major fund-raiser for

the Dare County Voluntary Action Center. by CNB
