Jack Robert Milburn, 83, formerly of Norfolk, left this world to be with his Creator on Sept. 5, 1996. The point of departure was the Culpeper Baptist Retirement Community, with his surviving wife by his side providing comfort for the journey.
Jack was born Feb. 24, 1913, in Crisfield, Md., the son of Roscoe Milburn and Bessie Wessels Milburn. Two sisters, Pennie and Sarah, predeceased him.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl D. Milburn; grandson, Thurman S. Simmons; stepchildren, Aileen D. Coggeshall, Pete Dilday and Donald Dilday; niece, Fay Howard, and nephew, Jay Tawes.
For 35 years, Jack was employed by the Norfolk Public Works Department, retiring in March 1978 as assistant superintendent of that department.
He was a lifelong churchgoer with nearly three decades of active service as a member of Norview Baptist Church. In 1982, the church was instrumental in providing him with two life honors: he was appointed Deacon Emeritus, and he married Pearl, whom he met in the congregation. Jack was also a member of Gideons International.
A memorial service, conducted by the Rev. James Bradshaw and the Rev. Hal Whitley, will be held at Norview Baptist Church at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in the name of Jack R. Milburn.
