MAN ROBBED, KILLED OUTSIDE HIS APARTMENT

A 44-year-old man was robbed and fatally shot outside his home early Sunday, police said.

The suspects escaped.

Police spokesman Lou Thurston said the victim, Edward Purnell, was returning to his Hilltop area apartment around 2 a.m. When he got out of his car in the parking lot, he was confronted and shot.

Two police officers sent to the scene performed CPR on Purnell before rescue workers arrived, but Purnell died in the Trauma Center of Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Thurston said Purnell had gone to the Texaco Food Mart at the intersection of Laskin Road and Regency Drive shortly before the shooting. His home on St. Bernard Square is in the Regency Apartments, a short drive from the food mart.

Police said they are looking for four men, described only as black, last seen leaving the area in a dark compact car. Police also are looking for information from anyone who was in the food mart around 2 a.m.

Anyone with information is asked to call 427-0000.
