For the second week in a row, a brush by a hurricane caused a lot of fishing trips to be canceled. But a few anglers made some impressive hauls before and after Fran's passage.
Henry Doe of Norfolk took the croaker lead in the annual Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament with a 4-pounder, decked at Pier 12 at Norfolk Naval Base.
A sextet of anglers on the private boat Starship earned citation awards from the contest with 1-pound spot, boated Sunday at Rudee Inlet.
They included Jimmy Kolb, the skipper, and guests Brent Hauser, Garrett Hauser, Brian Hauser, Mark Conrad and Jim Wright.
Some terrific white marlin action continued near the Cigar seamount, southeast of Rudee Inlet.
Anglers with skipper David Wright on the charter boat High Hopes released 15 whites there Tuesday.
On the freshwater scene, Cliff Baker of Norfolk scored an impressive double during the week. Fishing at Lake Whitehurst, he boated largemouth bass weighing 8 1/4 pounds and 6 pounds, 14 ounces.
However, the week's largest reported bass weighed 8-5 and was caught by Bill Schieman of Virginia Beach, also at Lake Whitehurst.
