GRACE J. SHUPING

Grace Johnson Shuping, 87, of Mayview Convalescent Center, formerly of 2441 W. Lake Drive, died Sept. 7, 1996.

She was born Oct. 9, 1908, in Wake County to the late John A. and Lillie Hayes Johnson. Her husband of more than 50 years, Lawrence B. Shuping Sr., predeceased her in 1986. Mrs. Shuping was a long-time member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was a former member of Carolina Country Club, and numerous local book, bridge and garden clubs, being known for her ``green thumb.''

She is survived by her son, Lawrence B. Shuping Jr. and wife, the fromer Jean Leggett and three grandchildren, Alexander L. Shuping, Jan Hughes W. Derbyshire and her husband, Adam C. Derbyshire and Elizabeth L. Weeks, all of Raleigh.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be at the home of her son today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at 3328 Landor Road, Raleigh. Arrangements are being handled by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's St. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 14405, Raleigh, N.C. 27620; Wake County SPCA, 327 Hwy. 70 E., Garner, N.C. 27529; or the charity of one's choice.
