Aircraft whistleblowers awarded $891,000

Two women who told the government 10 years ago that Hughes Aircraft Co. was not properly testing microelectronic circuits used in fighter planes are getting an $891,000 reward. The government said that Hughes will pay $4.05 million to settle a fraud suit brought originally by Margaret Goodearl and Ruth Aldred and later taken over by the government.

Hughes was convicted of criminal conspiracy on the same matter in 1992, largely based on the evidence of the two women, and was fined $3.5 million. (AP)

Bell Atlantic to hire 70 for wireless service

Bell Atlantic Corp. said Tuesday that its previously announced wireless cable TV service in Hampton Roads will employ about 70 people. The service, in which the company plans to use microwave signals to broadcast more than 100 channels of programming, is scheduled to be introduced in early 1997. The local operation, the first of its kind at Bell Atlantic, will be based in a 15,400-square-foot building under construction in Chesapeake's Greenbrier Technology Center I. Bell Atlantic said it signed a letter of intent to acquire another 4,900 square feet of space nearby for expansion. (Staff) Textron awards AT&T contract for $1.1 billion

AT&T Corp. said it received a $1.1 billion, 10-year contract to upgrade and manage communications systems for industrial and financial-services conglomerate Textron Inc. AT&T will install voice, data and video communications, including local exchange services, wide area and local area networking, and electronic mail. AT&T said that Textron will save $125 million over 10 years by centralizing its communications. Providence, R.I., based Textron has annual revenue of more than $9 billion. Morristown, N.J.-based AT&T has annual revenue of $79.6 billion. (Dow Jones News) Bell Atlantic schedules shareholder meeting

Bell Atlantic Corp. said Tuesday that its special shareholders meeting for voting on the company's proposed merger with Nynex Corp. will be held Nov. 8 at 10:30 a.m. at Richmond's Landmark Theater.

Nynex shareholders will vote Nov. 6 in New York City. Both companies said they will begin distributing joint proxy statements for the special meetings Sept. 18.
