LAKELAND TO HOST TABB AFTER WIN OVER NANSEMOND RIVER IN OPENER

Lakeland's trip through Group AAA competition will take a brief detour this week as the Cavaliers host Group AA Tabb.

The Cavaliers opened the season with a victory over rival Nansemond River in a nonconference game.

Meanwhile, the Warriors continue their journey through AAA with a home game against Churchland.

After getting off to a 2-0 start, Nansemond-Suffolk will have two weeks between games. This week's game against Gates was canceled because of a scheduling conflict.

In an eight-man football game, Southampton Academy (1-0) will host Wilson Christian at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Churchland at Nansemond River When: 7:30 p.m.

Records: Churchland (1-0); Nansemond River (0-1).

Outlook: Nansemond River has to prevent Churchland freshman quarterback Chatame Ward from repeating last week's performance. Ward rushed for two touchdowns, including a 10-yard run in overtime as the Truckers defeated Oscar Smith 21-13. Nansemond River's lone highlight in a 28-6 defeat to Lakeland was a 65-yard fumble return by Vernon Woodson.

Tabb at Lakeland When: 7:30 p.m.

Records: Tabb (1-0); Lakeland (1-0).

Outlook: Tabb should be well-rested after having last weekend off. The Group AA Tigers opened the season with a 33-7 victory over Osbourn Park. Lakeland's Travis Rawls singlehandedly destroyed Nansemond River, scoring four times and running for 194 yards. The Cavaliers' defense was just as dominating, holding the Warriors to negative rushing yardage until four minutes remained in the game.

Greensville at Southampton When: 7:30 p.m.

Records: Greensville (2-0); Southampton (1-0).

Outlook: Greensville stayed in the undefeated column with a victory over Franklin. Southampton won its 15th straight regular season game with a 44-0 victory over Brunswick. Rico Ivey and Arthur Porter each scored two touchdowns for the Indians.

Isle of Wight at Huguenot When: 7:30 p.m.

Records: Isle of Wight (2-0); Huguenot (record unavailable)

Outlook: The Chargers' running game accounted for three of the four touchdowns in a 24-13 victory over Greenbrier. Brothers Griffin and Van Williams combined for two touchdowns and 153 yards.

Windsor at Franklin When: 7:30 p.m.

Records: Windsor (0-2); Franklin (0-1)

Outlook: Franklin's 22-12 defeat to Greensville continues the Broncos winless streak going back to the 1994 season. Windsor has yet to score in two games.

Wilson Christian at Southampton Academy When: 7:30 p.m.

Records: Wilson Christian (record not available); Southampton Academy (2-0)

Outlook: The Raiders have won eight straight regular-season games and have yet to allow a point. by CNB
